Special Exhibition
YOKAI PARADISE NIPPON: Picture Scroll to Manga
Since ancient times, YOKAI (Japanese ghosts, monsters, demons and so forth) have been symbols of a wild natural power, and so humans of long ago held them in fear and respect, however as time progressed into the Edo period humans gained superiority over nature and with that perspective the reality of YOKAI faded away from them. At the same time YOKAI entered the fictional world as entertaining characters and became a theme for toys and caricatures.
In the present day, YOKAI benefit from a new identity thanks to Mizuki Shigeru's "YOKAI Manga" which succeeded the Edo period YOKAI illustrations, and they have come to be seen as "fun" by most Japanese people. That is, whilst they have become quite different from their original appearances, most of the YOKAI people know of today are from manga. It is possible to consider that in the first place, YOKAI illustrations from the Edo period were already manga.
This exhibition captures the essence of Edo period YOKAI illustrations as an origin of Japanese manga culture and character culture, and from there whilst following the genealogy of modern day YOKAI manga, reconsiders the relationship between YOKAI and the Japanese people
