Shoujo Manga Power! Stronger, Gentler, Prettier

Japanese manga has earned itself a lot of popularity around the world and in recent years shoujo manga (manga for girls) has attracted even more attention. The cause of this is perhaps shoujo manga’s variety of works which contain techniques of expression which can delve into one’s psyche and individuals that overcome the hardships of certain eras and societies.

In this exhibit we are showing the works of 23 manga artists who helped with the growth and development of shoujo manga in Japan. Through viewing this collection we hope to bring visitors a clearer view of the genre, shoujo. “Shojo Manga! Girl Power!,” a traveling exhibition that was displayed in 9 different areas in North America, can be seen here in Japan, now with even more exhibition pieces. You can see original illustrations as well as reproductions that stay extremely faithful to the originals like “Genga Dasshu.”* You can also see favorite instruments of the artists as well as videos of them at work; which all together make up over 300 items on display. From the beginning of the 1950s to the present day, shoujo manga has been delivering “power” to girls of both past and present. We hope that you can experience the radiance and liveliness that the creators put into this manga.

*The “Genga Dasshu” is a reproduction method of such high quality that it even includes the same pencil marks and eraser marks as the original illustrations. Only a few of this type of reproduction are created under the supervision of the artist.

Gallery Talk
Contents	During the exhibit, every Saturday at 2 p.m. our museum’s researcher (or a researcher studying the subject) will provide commentary on the exhibit. You must have the special exhibition ticket to attend. Also, you cannot re-enter the exhibit upon leaving.

Contents	This is a dialogue that will be held by Maki Miyako, a woman who started out in shoujo manga and then later made her mark in the genre of "Ladies Comics" and Takemiya Keiko, the leader of the revolutionary shoujo manga writing group, "Hana no 24 Nengumi".

Contents	With his many years of research on manga and animation overseas as a base, Ono will discuss the influences that Japanese shoujo manga has had on Western comics targeted at girls.
