"Obake Dangi: Discourse on Ghosts"
In Japan, the rise of manga has fostered an entire "character culture" of merchandise and tie-ins with popular characters. Obake and Youkai, or traditional Japanese ghosts, spirits, and other supernatural creatures, stand out even in this multitude of characters. But where did they come from, how did they spread, and how did they become the familiar part of Japanese culture that they are today?
In cooperation with Obake Daigako, which is organized by the Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Company, the Manga Museum is holding an event to deepen your understanding of Obake through a panel discussion and workshop.
The panel discussion will be with Kagawa Masanobu, the curator of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Histroy, and Adashino Rin, a novelist, who will guide you through the amazing world of Obake. Both fans of Obake themselves, they will tell you about how these mysterious creatures came about, as well as about Hakutaku, a mythical creature that is said to know much about Obake.
In addition, you can receive secret instruction on how to make your own "Youkai Dictionary" or "Illustrated Youkai Encyclopedia" in one of our workshops.
We hope that you will come and join us for this mid-winter Obake event.
*This event will be held in Japanese.
