GENGA'(DASH) EXHIBITON SERIES

Watanabe Masako & Kai Yukiko, Fantastic Journey

Kyoto International Manga Museum has been working on a project called Genga'(Dash), in which we reproduce manga as faithfully to the original as possible in order to convey the appeal of influential manga to the world. The museum holds exhibitions every year in Kyoto, and every summer at the Kinokuniya Gallery in Shinjuku, Tokyo, making sure to do so without any loss or damage to the original works.

This year, our Genga'Dash project features two new artists with contrasting styles. One is Watanabe Masako, who became successful in the early days of Shojo manga with her flashy style and tough, dramatic stories. The other is Kai Yukiko, who left behind a variety of work in her relatively short five-year career as an artist. We will exhibit Genga'(Dash) reproductions of these artists' works.

Venue Kinokuniya Gallery
(4th floor of the Shinjuku Kinokuniya building in Tokyo)
*This is not held at Kyoto International Manga Museum
Period Saturday, August 21, 2010 - Monday, August 30, 2010
Admission fee Free

A Fantastic Journey that Will Take You Somewhere Far, Far Away...

Watanabe Masako has been drawing for more than 50 years since she became popular in the early days of Shojo manga. She created dramas about girls with unfortunate fates, drawn in an alluring, expressive style. Readers were excited by her stories with their interesting plot twists, full of suspense and horror. However, she is now working on a fantasy world for adults by adapting the Chinese novel "Jin Ping Mei" into manga form.

Compared to Watanabe Masako, Kai Yukiko didn't stay in the manga industry very long, but during her five years as a manga author she worked in a variety of styles, from fantasy to human drama. Her detailed and colorful work has never ceased to interest readers, even thirty years after her death.

We are exhibiting about sixty works by these artists as a part of Genga'(Dash). You will be able to see the detail of their lines as well as their exquisite use of color. All of these details would be impossible to truly appreciate if they were copied by conventional means.

We will also exhibit a few works by the Genga'(Dash) project leader, Takemiya Keiko. We hope you enjoy the exhibition.

What is a Genga'Dash?

A Genga'(Dash) is an elaborate duplication of an original manga manuscript though the use of computerized fine color tone control and printing. It reproduces subtle differences in line shades and color gradation with such precision that the reproduction is almost indistinguishable from the original even when they are beside one another.

The Genga'(Dash) research project leader is Takemiya Keiko, a professor in the department of manga at Kyoto Seika University and the author/artist of manga titles Kaze to ki no uta (Poem of Wind and Trees) and Terra e (To Terra) amongst others. The project has been developing in collaboration with the Kyoto Seika University International Manga Research Center in order to aid in the preservation and public exhibition of manga manuscripts which are delicate and easily fade.
