Geraldine Kosiak Exhibition - CHIKAMA
To date, the Kyoto International Manga Museum has worked tirelessly to introduce manga / comics culture from not only within Japan but also from abroad. As a continuation of this, the museum has the pleasure of organizing an exhibition of the works of a new, up and coming artist from France, Geraldine Kosiak.
Kosiak has been based in Villa Kujoyama since January of this year, an artist residency association of the Institut Franco-Japonais du Kansai (Kansai French-Japanese Institute) operated by the French government. The current exhibition is a self-curated selection of the artist's work during her residency period in Japan, and will be her first solo exhibition in Japan. The exhibition theme is chikama, meaning 'nearby'.
This exhibition forms the third in a continuing series by the Villa Kujoyama artists-in-residence program, which previously introduced Lucie Albon (2009) and Pierre Gajewski (2010).

About Geraldine Kosiak
Born 1969, France. Artist.
A graduate of the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Lyon (National School of Fine Arts, Lyon), Kosiak has published a great number of anthologies and held countless exhibitions. Her debut art anthology J'ai peur (I'm afraid) has been widely published, including in America, Spain, and Greece. Kosiak's style incorporates sketching, text, and photography.
In creating artwork based on intuition, Kosiak depicts real facts and personalities with a scrupulosity which exposes the fragility of that reality. Whilst outwardly maintaining harmony, these pictures give the impression of ghostly apparitions taking form.
Kosiak is currently in residency at the Institut Franco-Japonais du Kansai Villa Kujoyama. In March of this year she contributed to the artbook Echos, in support of reconstruction efforts for the Tohoku earthquake affected regions.
Additionally, Kosiak has won esteem in the Manga Museum as one of the participating artists in the exhibition "March. 11 seen through the eyes of comic artists from all over the world : Magnitude Zero."
About Villa Kujoyama

Residents are selected after a rigorous judging process, and are then able to pursue their own projects whilst gaining a deeper experience of Japan. Since opening, the villa has welcomed over 200 artists and researchers from a wide range of fields such as modern art, philosophy and social science.
