About The "Kappa Figure Contest"
It is a contest for creators of Kappa, first held in 2009, by the founder of Kaiyodo Co., the company that manufacturers the world's greatest figurines, who is also the project leader and director of the Kaiyodo Hobby Center (inaugurated in April 2011 in Shimanto Town, Kochi Prefecture), Mr. Miyawaki Osamu. Because Kochi is the home of Mr. Miyawaki's father, it was made as part of a nature park with as a theme "creating a town for the inhabitants of Shimanto and the hobbies and collections of Kaiyodo".
Professional artists as well as amateurs can compete in the contest and can choose the material and dimensions of their work freely. There were 363 entries for the first contest last year, and this year there were 475.
The Chairman of the jury is Makino Keiichi, a manga artist and the director of the International Manga Research Center. Among the other renowned jury members are Mr. Chiba Tetsuya (manga artist) and Murakami Takashi (contemporary artist). All winning entries will be presented at the figurine festival "Wonder Festival" hosted by Kaiyodo.
