EGUCHI HISASHI POP ART EXHIBITION: KING OF POP - KYOTO EDITION
The Kyoto International Manga Museum is pleased to present a large-scale exhibition looking back on 38 years of artwork by the manga artist Eguchi Hisashi.
With big hits like his first serialized work Susume!! Pirates in 1977, and Stop!! Hibari-kun! in 1981, Eguchi was a leading innovator in Japanese gag manga. Capitalizing on his pop art style that expresses three-dimensionality and texture using simple line-work, and his excellent design sense, he has also made strides in the field of illustration. It is no exaggeration to say that his diverse body of work crosses genres, and has had a major impact on subculture at large.
Last year the travelling exhibition Eguchi Hisashi King of Pop began touring the nation to celebrate works collected in his artbook King of Pop: Eguchi Hisashi Complete Illustration Collection (Genkosha Co.).
This exhibition brings together over 300 works on display, including a large number of original artwork, by incorporating works from the travelling exhibition as well as selected works from King of Pop: Side B a retrospective research exhibition of Eguchi's works held at the Meiji University Yoshihiro Yonezawa Memorial Library of Manga and Subculture.
15 latest original illustration works which are first appearing from this Kyoto exhibition will be added to the exhibition from the Part 2 (from July 21st).
