Exhibition & Live Drawing Event
Yamada Akihiro Exhibition - Worlds from a Magic Brush -
The Kyoto International Manga Museum is proud to present an exhibition of original works by the manga artist and illustrator Yamada Akihiro.
This exhibition will showcase Yamada's diverse repertoire of manga, illustrations, game and anime character designs which elicit a delicate and beautiful view of the world. The exhibition will also offer an insight to his work process, with a display corner that shows his creative ingenuity and different rendering methods through the use of a slideshow and changing art supplies.
As an accompaniment to the exhibition there will be a live drawing event, in which Yamada will be invited to create artwork on the spot.
Indulge to your heart's content and be mesmerized by the world view brought forth by the artist's hand.

Exhibition Details
A total of 130 exhibition items focusing on original color illustrations and design sketches from amongst the artist's diverse work in illustration, games, anime and book cover design.
Approximately 50 of the exhibited artworks will be changed midway.
First term: April 29 - May 17
Second term: May 19 - June 5
● Roughly 80 artworks comprising of manga manuscripts, illustrations, character designs etc.
- Conceptual notes, manga manuscripts and color illustrations from the series Beast of East (published by Gentosha Comics)
- Character designs and cover illustrations from Twelve Kingdoms (Kodansha. Written by Ono Fuyumi), as well as a signature board signed by Ono Fuyumi.
- Cover illustrations and a production process slideshow for Records of Three Kingdoms (Kodansha. Written by Ozawa Akitomo)
- Manga manuscripts and color illustrations from Record of Lodoss War: The Lady of Pharis (Kadokawa Shoten. Written by Mizuno Ryo)
- Cover and front matter illustrations from the novel Legend of Lodoss (Kadokawa Shoten. Written by Mizuno Ryo)
- DVD Cover art and anime design illustrations from Rahxephon (BONES. Written by Izubuchi Yutaka)
- Cover illustrations from Legacy I (Wave Publishing. Written by Cayla Kluver) And others

A slide show of the illustration process for a book cover of Records of Three Kingdoms (Kodansha), recorded through stop motion photography. From line drawing, to the final color inking
● Stories from behind the artwork, tracing creative originality
A side-by-side exhibition of an original manga manuscript in a pre-coloured state and completed colored artwork, in order to illustrated the production process.

Yamada Akihiro - Worlds from a Magic Brush -
Live demonstration by Yamada himself, of sketching and painting, etc. A sensory experience conducted in an atmosphere like that of the regular art demonstrations held in the museum's studio corner.

Yamada Akihiro
Manga artist and illustrator. Yamada Akihiro is a resident of Kyoto Prefecture, born in Kouchi Prefecture in 1957, who debuted professionally in 1981. Characteristic for his beautiful, delicate literary style, his forte is in creating works with a view of the world that intoxicate the reader. He is a popular artists with many fans throughout Japan and abroad, known for masterpieces such as Beast of East, and Lodoss War: The Lady of Pharis, and has produced illustrations for novels such as Twelve Kingdoms as well as anime character designs for Rahxephon and a wide range of other work. He was featured in solo exhibitions from 2006, starting with the Yokoyama Memorial Manga Museum in Kouchi prefecture. He held an exhibition entitled "Dall'Ukiyo-e all'illustrazione contemporanea" in the Albertina Museum in Torino, Italy in 2010 and was acclaimed as one of the great graphic artists to have emerged from the tradition of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. In recent years, he has worked on the concept designs for the movie Shinobi: Heart Under Blade and cover illustrations for Records of Three Kingdoms published by Kodansha Aoitori Bunko.
