In fierce business competition, these two rival magazines introduced a great many masterpieces. Their success paved the way for many more manga magazines. Moreover, strings of hits carried in either of these two magazines were subsequently published as stand-alone books, transformed into anime works and aired on TV. In this way, the two magazines played an essential role in creating Japanese children's and young adults' culture. Basically, over the past half-century the two magazines, representing weekly boys' manga magazines, helped form the core of Japan's contemporary audiovisual and multi-media culture. Since this culture has significantly influenced the aesthetic and cultural values of present-day Japan, reviewing the history of the two magazines is meaningful and helpful for understanding current Japanese culture and arts.
Displaying a time line and original images of 100 manga works carried in the two magazines, this Exhibition spotlights a wide diversity of manga categories, such as baseball, combat sports and romance comedies, which resulted from the competition between the two magazines. Regarding these respective categories as "cultural genes" inherited by succeeding generations of artists, as organizers we intend to illustrate the influence of these "genes" on present-day Japanese culture and social trends. We sincerely hope that visitors to the Exhibition will enjoy the fascinating features of boys' manga and discover the boundless potential of manga as a cultural medium.
