Chinese characters for the words “描く(kaku/ draw)” and “猫(neko/ cat)” are remarkably similar.
That could be why I have strange feelings whenever I am drawing a cat.
Why am I talking about this? It’s because I am now preparing for a new manga series and the main character of it is a cat.
I used to have five dogs, so I can draw dogs without opening my eyes.
Because of my experience, I was a dog person before and to be honest, I did not like cats at all.
But I completely changed after encountering a kitten at a park about 4 years ago. I have been taking care of this cat every week since then. Finally, I am even going to draw the cat manga now.
But….there is a problem. I cannot draw cats well.
Cats are mysterious. The more you know about cats, the more you get confused by them.
Not only for drawing cats, but also for drawing something in general, observation, or in other words, the spirit of inquiry is needed.
I have been drawing for a long time, but I think I forgot about the spirit of inquiry. My struggle for drawing cats feels like a punishment for forgetting about it.
When I see their movement like mollusks, I feel like my knowledge of bones and muscles is nothing and I lose my confidence in drawing.
On the other hand, I re-started to feel excited when there is a new thing that I can draw well after this experience. It seems like I can still enjoy “adventure of drawing new things”.
Is it thanks to “描く(kaku/ draw)” or “猫(neko/ cat)”?
Would you like to have joy of drawing like I did? Why don’t you come to“Counselling Room for Drawing Manga” at the Manga Studio?
It doesn’t matter how old you are or what kind of gender you have. We will be ready to share joy of drawing with you!!
